Understanding The Waiting List For Organ Transplant

Organ transplantation is a process of removal of organ from a person’s body that is placed in recipient’s body, which helps them function properly in their day to day lives. But this transplantation is based upon the registration, after which you are put down on a wait list. Waiting for the donor of an organ, might take a lot of time, as unfortunately, many people are there on this list, then the availability of organ donors, so be ready to wait, as it may last for many years.

The rules for waiting list depends upon the organ, where the general criteria are the medical urgency of the patient, tissue, size, and blood match to that of the donor, donor’s proximity and time for waiting, as there would be many on the list, so you may have to wait for your turn as well. Income or financial status, race, ethnic background, and celebrity status are some of the factors that are not the criteria through which the organ allocation will happen, as every life matters, and you cannot save someone based on such factors.

While you are on the waiting list, you have to keep a follow up on regular basis, with the team of transplant, and also follow important instructions provided by the doctors. So, if there is anything, any changes for say, then you should inform your doctor or team of transplant such as if,

·         You are hospitalized,
·         The condition of your kidney worsens,
·         Your telephone number or address changes,
·         Your insurance coverage is over, you are traveling any place outside or far,
·         Any changes which may affect the medical care, and
·         Even when there are any dental examinations where you have any oral infection or tooth decay, then all this should be followed up by the doctors.

Also you should be all time prepared and ready to go to hospital when you are called, as the transplant can happen any time.
