Organ
transplantation is assumed by most to be a last resort when treating an organ
which is failing. But when it comes to kidney disease, transplantation is often
preferred by doctors as the first line of treatment. It is supposed to be the
first resort to treat a defective kidney. When a patient matches all the
requirements for transplantation, it is considered as the most efficient option
and a long term treatment. But the absence of enough kidneys for
transplantation makes haemodialysis and other alternatives more common than it.
Dialysis is the mechanism by which the blood of the patient’s body is filtered
and urine is formed artificially. It does the work of a normal working kidney.
But before you decide on your line of treatment, you should be aware of certain
facts:
1. Dialysis has both pros and cons-
People often dislike dialysis even
before they try it, but it has been commonly observed that most patients after
trying dialysis felt a lot better than before. They had more energy, their
appetite had returned and they also started gaining weight. But regular
dialysis consumes a lot of the time of the patient which reduces the quality of
the person’s life and limits his independence.
2. Transplant has more benefits than side effects-
You can’t
expect to get a transplant done and everything will be as normal as it was
before. Kidney transplant comes with a few negatives, but the overall long term
as well as short term outcomes are way better than the patients being treated
by dialysis. People who have undergone transplantation have been observed to
live longer and healthier with better quality of life.
