Transplantation
is a major operation as all of us know, and it is mainly done for organs like
kidney, heart, lungs. Out of the long and unending queue of people demanding an
organ transplant, a large portion fails to receive the transplant because their
immune system are examined to reject any graft that is not matching enough.
What is desensitisation?
With the
advent and advancement of science and technology, researchers have found an
innovative way to end the anguish. The way being - acceptance of kidney from
donors those are incompatible - the concept of desensitisation. In the long and
agonising procedure of finding the perfect match for the kidney to be replaced,
a whole lot of tests and biological matches are done. This is believed to
reduce the risk of organ rejection.
How does desensitisation work?
The
procedure of desensitisation is done by altering the immune system of the
patient. This is done by rebooting the chain of antibodies, so that the power
of organ rejection is greatly suppressed. However the regenerated antigens that
give rise to newer antibodies formed after the filtration of the older are
participate less actively in the rejection. Hence you need a living donor and
not exaggerate about a living human donor. The biggest application of
desensitisation is however - kidney exchange. In case of the former, patients
with incompatible living donors can also exchange or to be more precise swap
donor who is more genetically similar to them. Desensitisation although
expensive is however cheaper than dialysis, in the long run.
Recipient's mind-set while receiving the transplant:
Recipient
awaiting the transplant should agree entirely with the hospital's request for
information. Since a lack of confidence and a feeling of hesitation or
reluctance to share necessary information with the authorities can delay your
process in return.
