Nutrition after Renal Transplant

Nutrition after Renal Transplant

In order to recover from kidney transplantation, you must consume good nutrition. Just like after any surgery, you must consume adequate amounts of calories and protein for proper wound healing. The side effects of the anti-rejection medications will also increase the requirement of nutrition. Thus, there will be a necessity of changing your diet for a time being just after the transplant to help your body heal faster and successfully. Usually, the dietary concerns are explained to you by the transplant team according to your needs and tolerances.

In many cases, transplant patients may develop nutrition-related problems immediately after the transplant. One of the most common problems is excessive weight gain along with high blood cholesterol. This may also be caused by steroids and other medications prescribed for the transplant. Thus, you must try and follow a diet that is low in fats and high in nutrition like proteins and fibre. You must also follow a proper exercise regime to control fat. This will help you reduce the risk of heart disease and excessive weight gain.

Some tips to follow a healthy diet plan after renal transplant –
  • When you go shopping for food, read food labels carefully to avoid products which have high saturated fats and cholesterol.
