Organ donation process is the removal of tissue or an organ, surgically, from an organ donor, which is then placed into the recipient that is the person who requires the transplant. Transplantation process is helpful and necessary as the organ of the recipient has failed to function or is damaged due to injury or disease, in which case the transplantation and donation is required.

This process of transplantation and donation has been the greatest advance in the medicine area. However, it is unfortunate to see that the requirement of organ donors that are the recipients, has been a lot more than the ones who donates actually. Many people are dying waiting for the organ donation.

·         The tissues and organs that are possible to be transplanted consists of Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Heart, Lung, Intestine, Cornea, Middle ear, Skin, Bone, Bone marrow, Heart valves, Connective tissue, and Vascularized composite allografts (VCA) includes transplantation of skin, bone, muscles, and nerves.

·         People with any age can consider themselves as a potential donor. After a person’s death, based upon the age and medical history, they are evaluated to see their suitability to be a potential donor or not.

·         If you are in need for getting tissue or an organ transplant, then you are required to get upon the national list for waiting. In order to get upon this list, you will have to go to transplant hospital, where the doctor will be examining you, based on which it would be decided whether you are an eligible transplant candidate or not. If you are then you will be added to the list, and then you will have to wait which may take some time.

Transplant team is send the organ as per the best match, where they either accept or reject based upon medical criteria and other factors. If it doesn’t then they have to forward it to next patient who is on the waiting list, and the same process is continued till the organ has been placed.
