Advantages and Disadvantages of Organ Transplants

Organ Transplants

Organ donation has saved numerous lives. It is estimated that 25 different organs from a human body have the potential to be donated successfully. With such a demand for organs in every corner of the world, we are going to shed some light in the major advantages and disadvantages of organ donation.

Advantages

There are three main benefits of organ transplant. They are:

  • According to statistics, organ donation saves around 100,000 lives annually. An organ transplant can be required by a person of any age or gender. The highest demand in the market is for kidneys. Pancreas, lung, and heart transplants are equally in need. Organ donation provides a ray of hope to individuals who do not have a chance of surviving without the organ.
  • It is possible for people to donate organs without having to die unexpectedly. Bone marrow and kidney transplants are common examples of transplants that can be ones donated by living people. Partial transplants of certain organs, like lung or liver, are also quite possible.
  • An organ transplant helps in making the life of a hopeless person as productive as it can be. It gives the patient a ray of hope.

Disadvantages

There can be no advantage without a disadvantage. Some of the major disadvantages of organ donation include:

  • A transplant doesn’t change the fact that there has been a tragedy. A heart transplant or any major organ transplant is only possible after the death of another human being. Regardless, it is a matter of grief.
  • According to a review, about 10 percent of organ transplant recipients had developed diabetes later in their life. Other than diabetes, the risk of acquiring general illnesses is also high.
  • There is always a risk of surgical complications. This could happen with the living donor as well. Even a small change in the procedure could become a major problem for the donor or recipient.
After going through the pros and cons, it can be understood that advantages are way greater than the potential risks.
