A kidney has a role of filtering out the waste
products from the blood and discarding it from our body in the form of urine.
When kidneys stop functioning due to heath conditions, this waste is
accumulated in our body and is very dangerous as it could be life- threatening.
This is where a kidney transplant comes in
handy where a healthy kidney from a donor is transferred to the body of the
patient who has severe impairment in on or both of their kidneys.
The transplant occurs through surgery with lots
of risks. Short term risks include blood clots while long term includes
diabetes and other infections. Due to these risk factors, patients with
transplant should regularly visit their doctors, without fail.
Kidney transplants have excellent benefits and
it also means that you must constantly keep your health in check by being
monitored by several doctors. After the surgery, here are a few things you must
keep in mind.
Going back home:
Once you are discharged, you will have to take
your medications and check for vitals, every day. You must also note down other
important signs such as temperature, blood pressure, weight as well as pulse.
You will also be scheduled for several lab tests which you might have to visit
at a regular interval, more frequently during the first 3 weeks and then
occasionally for the later weeks.
Sometimes, there is a risk of rejection of the
kidney by the body, due to which one must take anti-rejection medicines to make
your immune system less active to fight the kidney. They can have some side
effects which are mostly manageable and can be kept under control. It takes about 4 to 8 weeks for your body to
completely recover after the transplant; hence, you can go back to work and
other daily routines, after a through check-up and a heads-up from your doctor.
